2 Samuel 12:1-7, 10-17, Psalm 51

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms a Storm

On the evening of that same day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake. So they left the crowd; the disciples got into the boat in which Jesus was already sitting, and they took him with them. Other boats were there too. Suddenly a strong wind blew up, and the waves began to spill over into the boat, so that it was about to fill with water. Jesus was in the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?”

Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, “Be quiet! and he said to the waves, Be still!” The wind died down, and there was a great calm. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Why are you frightened? Do you still have no faith?”

But they were terribly afraid and began to say to one another, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Samuel 11:1-4, 5-10, 13-17, Psalm 51

Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

The Parable of the Growing Seed

Jesus went on to say, “The Kingdom of God is like this. A man scatters seed in his field. He sleeps at night, is up and about during the day, and all the while the seeds are sprouting and growing. Yet he does not know how it happens. The soil itself makes the plants grow and bear fruit; first the tender stalk appears, then the head, and finally the head full of grain. When the grain is ripe, the man starts cutting it with his sickle, because harvest time has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

“What shall we say the Kingdom of God is like?” asked Jesus. “What parable shall we use to explain it? It is like this. A man takes a mustard seed, the smallest seed in the world, and plants it in the ground. After a while it grows up and becomes the biggest of all plants. It puts out such large branches that the birds come and make their nests in its shade.”

Jesus preached his message to the people, using many other parables like these; he told them as much as they could understand. He would not speak to them without using parables, but when he was alone with his disciples, he would explain everything to them.

Story behind “Nothing Can Stop”

While driving, a friend of mine asked me what the inspiration was behind the song, “Nothing Can Stop”. I haven’t told anyone lately that it was composed 4 years ago (2008), way back in Davao, for the CFC-YFC Provincial youth conference, “Love 24/7″. I then recalled what happened to me during that year and how God’s grace never stopped overflowing in spite of all my failures during that year, realizing that God never requires me to love Him back the way he loves me and the only thing He desires is for me to live in freedom and celebrate in His love.

It was mid-2008 when I started to wake up late after graduating from college (yey!). I felt that I was free at last from projects, homework, exams, and other brain cell consuming activities (lol). I was living the life I dreamt of during my college years, to be free and to do whatever I want. After a while my father started to get frustrated with the things I’ve been doing with myself, believing that I was becoming a person who had no direction in life. I never even tried to offer my help to them and became a burden to the family instead of an asset to them. It was then that my father had to talk to me and reprimand me for how I’ve been living my life. He was there just to guide me as my father; however there were some words that came out of his mouth that I didn’t like. I was hurt and wasn’t able to rise above that situation. That hurt consumed me and turned into anger towards my father. For months I didn’t speak with him and, to prove myself to my family, I got a job.

I continued to serve in the CFC community (with an empty heart), and I became an SFC member. I showed them that I am capable of being successful through my own skills and talents until one day, when my mother was trying to talk to me about my job.  I made a heated statement that hurt her and made her cry. She then lamented over my attitude that for so long they were adjusting and was trying to reach out to me but I was just too proud and purposefully shoved them away. While I was so focused on my work, she was there waking up early preparing meals for me to have something to eat. When I had no ride, my father was there to drive me to my office. When I was busy achieving, they were there busy praying for me.

2 Timothy 1:1-8 or Titus 1:1-5, Psalm 96

Gospel: Mark 4:21-25

A Lamp under a Bowl

Jesus continued, “Does anyone ever bring in a lamp and put it under a bowl or under the bed? Isn’t it put on the lampstand? Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be uncovered.Listen, then, if you have ears!”

He also said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear! The same rules you use to judge others will be used by God to judge you—but with even greater severity. Those who have something will be given more, and those who have nothing will have taken away from them even the little they have.”
